déjeuner suédois

To celebrate Kelly's return to Paris from Stockholm, we met up this afternoon for lunch at the Swedish cultural center in the Marais, a neighborhood in central Paris.  Kelly's text the night before offering the center as a noon meal destination surprised me.  I didn't realize that cultural centers were in the restaurant business.  Upon receiving the message, I looked online and learned about the "café suédois", which I assumed was a small room in the corner of the cultural center that served coffee, pastries and a few fish sandwiches.  While they do serve each of those items, they are much classier than I ever would have expected.  This is Paris, after all! :)

Above, you will notice the selections of our petit Swedish smorgasborg in the beautiful open courtyard of the centre culturel suédois.  Served on IKEA plates with coordinating glasses and silverware were a tuna salad sandwich and a herring/potato salad sandwich. (There was a sign posted just inside the threshold of the café thanking IKEA for the generous donation of the servingware and the furnitre.)  For dessert, we selected a carrot cake and a lingonberry (sp?) crumble both accompanied by a dollop of crème chantilly (whipped cream).  The food, the weather (beautiful!) and of course the company made for a lovely midday, early spring outing in Paris.
